As we wave goodbye to our strange-weather spring, summer brightly enters our lives under a rainbow, paving way for the culminating week of Pride month. Celebrated each June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, Pride month is the perfect time to get involved with LGBT organizations. Whether you’re looking for a job, an internship, or a way to volunteer in one of many Pride events, Idealist has thousands of LGBT focused opportunities currently posted. Below are some highlights, but remember, your search can span far and wide!
For those who have experience counseling, check out the Community Advocate position with the Lutheran Settlement House in Philadelphia where you can work on community outreach, group counseling, and educational service. They’re also looking for Domestic Violence Advocates if you’d like to volunteer. If you prefer counseling one-on-one and are a licensed psychologist, psy.d, LCSW, or LMHC, perhaps you’d like to work part-time at the Institute for Human Identity, a New York LGBT psychotherapy center that provides affordable therapy and encourages personal growth and freedom from bias.
If you want to focus more on administration, marketing and communication, and/or event planning, take a look at the two great jobs open at The New York City Anti-Violence Project. Massachusetts also has a wealth of offerings, ranging from Communications Director, LGBTQ Rights Researcher, and Library Intern positions at Somerville’s Political Research Associates to the Marketing, Recruitment, and Outreach Specialist job at Fenway Community Health Center. Maybe you’d rather keep away from those Northeastern winters, though. If you have prior experience event managing and organizing, you might be a perfect fit for the Senior Events Associate job at Out & Equal Workplace Advocates in San Francisco or the Education Justice Coordinator at the Illinois Safe School Alliance.
No counseling license or years of experience zipped up in your bag? No worries! Just Detention International, an organization devoted to ending sexual violence in all forms of detention, is hiring an entry-level Program Assistant in Los Angeles. Want to stay in California but make good use of your web savvy skills? The National Center for Lesbian Rights is looking for a Communications Associate to begin immediately.
Ranging from full-time and paid to volunteer-like and, well, unpaid, internships are a fantastic way to gain experience, explore potential career paths, and discover what you truly love to do.
The Trevor Project, committed to ending suicide among LGBTQ youth, has both jobs and internships available for those interested in marketing, web development, and funding. Those looking for work in communications or social media may want to check out the internships at Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund and Equality California. But wait! What about promoting change from within our government? Based in Washington D.C., The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund and Institute helps LGBT leaders win office and serve effectively, and they’re looking for two development interns this summer!
Finally, whether you’d like to volunteer, or simply attend, celebrate, and cheer, don’t forget to check out the Pride events and parades happening in your area. Multiple cities are holding their Pride Parade on June 30th, and many, like New York and Chicago, have events leading right up to the day.
So whether you’re off to a job, internship, or an event, march on with pride!
