  1. Thanks for the article! I moved from Yonkers NY to Warwick NY (only 65 miles away) 2 years ago. Fortunately I can telecommute for the 2 jobs I have in White Plains NY and drive once per week for a day in the office so the pressure to find a new job is not extreme.

But I would much rather be working as well as living in my new community. For me it would be much better to have that feeling of connection. Recently I took a documentary video course at Jacob Burns Media Arts Center in Pleasantville NY, which is close enough to drive (an hour and a half each way) once per week.

I used the course to reach out to the Historical Society here in Warwick and, as a class project, shot a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSxoj5kzme4) for them on on pro bono basis about a Festival of Toys that was happening during the time I was taking the course. I am hoping that as I continue to network I will eventually find paid employment closer to home.

One of the first things I did almost 2 years ago after moving was to join a group (Warwick Career Transition Group) I saw advertised in a local newspaper. It was the facilitator of the group who suggested the Toy Festival as a potential video project. So one contact leads to another.

    • Thank you so much for sharing all of this, Alice! I’m sure this well help other readers get a jolt of inspiration once they start brainstorming options that will work for them, too.
