Introducing, Ask Alexis

After many years at the helm, our very own Victoria Crispo of “Ask Victoria” has passed the baton, and so we’re officially renaming our beloved column. Welcome to Ask Alexis!

We’ll miss Victoria’s insight and expertise, but we’re still here and hoping to field your toughest career questions, so keep them coming! I’m eager to help you continue to troubleshoot your social-impact challenges and to offer advice as you map out your career trajectory.

What kinds of things can you send me?

• The basics: Questions on formatting your resume, drafting a cover letter, networking, or any of the other building blocks necessary for a comprehensive job or internship search.
• The little things: If a little, nagging question comes to mind, send it along. How should you dress for an interview at an organization that follows a “casual” dress code? Which benefits tend to be negotiable? What’s the best way to prepare for a phone interview? Where are the best places to find free professional development opportunities? Is it okay to bring coffee into an interview?
• Transition questions: Sector-switching is our specialty, so if you have any questions about how to move from the private sector to the nonprofit or public space, send them over!
• A good old fashioned vent: Sometimes, complaining is the best medicine. If you simply need to get something off of your chest, go for it! Whether it’s an issue with a colleague, supervisor, or your office bestie, share it here and I’ll offer my best solution, a commiserating nod, and some crowdsourced advice for good measure.
